Natural History Museum - Event Space Overview

Opened in 1913. the Natural History Museum is located in Downtown LA right next to the USC Coliseum. Governed by the State of CA, the museum is the largest natural and historical museum in the western United States in addition to operating as a research and educational institution. It’s architectural style is described as Beaux Arts, Neoclassical, Romanesque, and Spanish Lateresque. The interior of the property has been widely used for filming, including for TV shows “Bones,” “Scandal,” and “How I Met Your Mother.”

The museum has 3 floors of permanent exhibits. There are 5 indoor spaces that are used for special events and rentals as well as 1 courtyard/garden area. The different combination of spaces for different portions of event lead to various possibilities for event flow.. In addition to use of event rooms, client get access to first floor exhibits that guests can walk through; for an additional fee, clients can also gain access to second floor exhibits. There are a few conferences spaces available during the daytime and most social and wedding celebrations take place after 5pm, when the museum is already closed to the public.

African Mammal Hall

World-famous and much-beloved, the African Mammal Hall's dioramas display white elephants, water buffalo, and giraffe in their natural environments. The hall features a cork floor that provides the perfect surface for dancing. Create your next adventure in the African Mammal!

Otis Booth Pavilion

This modern glass-enclosed pavilion opened in June 2013 in conjunction with out Grand Centennial Celebration. AN amazing location for a ceremony or cocktails, this area will wow yours guests as they enter the museum underneath our iconic fin whale.

North and East Nature Gardens

North and East Nature Gardens

This earthen location delivers tranquility! A ceremony upon one of two viewing docks along the pond or among shaded serenity of the bird viewing platform will be hard for any nature-lover to resist. This area offers winding paths through vine covered arbors, vegetable plants, fruit trees, flowering bushes and trees. Use this conjunction with our Rotunda or Otis Booth Pavilion for a truly unforgettable experience!

Lined with marble columns and crowned by a stained glass dome, the room is also the home of the very first piece of public art funded by Los Angeles County: a Beaux-Arts statue entitled Three Muses," which represents the disciplines of Art, History, and Science. The Rotunda is the perfect space for wedding ceremonies and any kind of private or corporate reception. With glass doors that look out over Exposition Park, it is the ideal space to be used in conjunction with the Exposition Rose Garden.

Grand Foyer

Complete skeletons of Tyrannosaurus Rex and a Triceratops - the "Dueling Dinosaurs" - command the center of the Museum's Grand Foyer. Dramatic architectural details include 40-foot celings, twin half-domes, marble columns, and travertine floors. Gala exhibition openings at the Museum are typically held here, with buffet-style entertaining. The Grand Foyer is the ultimate setting for cocktail receptions, corporate events, and celebrations.

North American Mammal Hall

A herd of bison outlines against a blue Midwestern sky forms the dominant tableau in the North American Mammal Hall. Slightly larger than the African Mammal Hall, the room has an expansive feel to it, appropriate to its namesake. Used for receptions, lectures or dinners, and in conjunction with the African Mammal Hall and the Grand Foyer, the North American Mammal Hall offers inspiring possibilities.

  • Six event spaces to choose from: Otis Booth Pavilion, Haaga Family Rotunda, Grand Foyer, Samuel Oschin Family Hall of African Mammals, North American Mammal Hall, and Easter and North Gardens.
  • Late night availability until 2am for an additional hourly fee.
  • Natural History Museum provides 350 natural brown padded folding chairs, 25 60" tables, 4 72" tables, 8 standing cocktail tables, 4 seated cocktail tables, 10 8ft banquet tables, and 10 6ft banquet tables.
  • One year VIP Fellows-Level Membership to the Natural History Museum, the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits, and the Hart Ranch and Museum.
  • Use of "non-event" galleries for photography.
  • 200 parking spaces in secured lot.
  • All security, housekeeping, operations, and event management staffing.
  • Restrictions/ Rules to Keep in Mind
  • Client may bring their own alcohol but a licensed bartender/caterer is required to pour and serve.
  • Flame candles are prohibited, however, LED candles are acceptable.
  • Cut flowers and plants are permitted, however, live or plotted plants are not allowed-absolutely no soil may be brought onto the premises.
  • Also prohibited: live animals, helium balloons, confetti, and smoke/fog machines. Nothing can be hung on the walls, cases, or outside the museum, everything must be free standing.
  • Set up inside the venue may begin no earlier than 4pm. The museum is open to the public until 5pm 7 days a week - No event may begin before 6pm.
