These coming of age celebrations are a chance to recognize the coming of age of your teen, the hard work from the family to get them there, and the support from your communities that have been there along the way. There are many involved, and many things likely on your mind when you start planning.

The Ultimate Bat Mitzvah or Bar Mitzvah

These days, we are seeing a shift in the way families celebrate Bar Mitzvahs and Bat Mitzvahs. These events are made up of a range of guest types and there are expectations from every corner when it comes to themes, food, and event styles. Hitting the mark for all guests (and teens) involved can be achieved with a well-curated menu.

Helpful Tips When Planning This Milestone Event

Vision and Space -First things first, consider your venue.
    • What sort of space is the event taking place (Indoor / outdoor / venue / backyard / poolside)?
    • How will the weather affect your event?
    • Does your space have power or access to an oven?

Service Style and Guest Expectations - How do you want the food to be available to guests?

    • Busy all day and want your event to have a casual vibe? Consider grazing platters and easy pre-filled trays that are quick to place on a buffet table.
    • Would your teen totally freak over a doughnut wall display or is that overkill because give them a scoop of ice cream and they are happy?
    • Consider a menu that will satisfy the range of guest types, from kids to grandparents, to the mailman. Different dietary options, enhancing menu for an adult audience, or a menu that fits a theme.

Mirror The Movement- At one point you’re mingling with distant relatives, and the next you might be wrangling the young ones. Keep the energy of your guests in mind.

    • Is your family on the rambunctious side where grabbable food and grazing platters allow them to get back to the dance floor?
    • Do you know both sets of grandparents are flying in for this and they can’t help the after-dinner drowsiness? Hello, coffee station next to kids' hot cocoa DIY bar!
    • Does having a designated meal break and sitting down together feel like a highlight or a negative for the guests at this event? We love a good family-style meal, but sometimes quick bites are the most effective.
    • Does your timeline allow for a dessert at the end?(aka adults catch some grown-up time while the kids gather around the sundae bar).
    • Think the energy will die down earlier? Or maybe you want it to (we get that), consider a candy bar with take-home bags for guests to grab on their way out.

Don't Lose Sight of Your Teen- Highlighting this guest is our favorite part!

    • At the end of the day, our favorite marker of success is how big your teen's smile is.
    • There are surely politics involved when navigating traditions, budgets, and timelines but including the youth is a great way to set expectations and help them feel great about their day. At bite, we love any chance we get to pick the brains of the teen so we can hit the mark for them and for you.

Recipe for The Ultimate Bar/Bat Mitzvah :

    • Start with ease- Decide how much energy you have for this event. Planning, day-of coordination, spending time in the kitchen vs with your guests.
    • Gather the details- Details on space, guests, budget, etc will steer your menu towards the ease of a delivery/buffet set up to a more lavish affair of passed bites or a seated meal.
    • Choose the crowd you cater to- Is this a celebration to honor the adults just as much as the youth and do you want to split the menu offerings to cater to both groups or mix them all into one? Inviting the whole bunch? Remember to have a bite that fits all the pallets involved.
    • Sprinkle in the details- Once the bones of the event and vision are in place, details like service style, themes, and extra special moments are what enhance and personalize your event.
